Notes:

It is important to underline that simple comparisons of population rates should be made with caution since there are still differences in case definitions in a few countries and quality of reporting may differ across them.

The calculations of population mortality rates are based on 2011 population sizes as reported by Eurostat.

For Czech Republic, EMCDDA Selection D was used instead of the national definition.

For Greece data refers to the reported number of deaths.

For Austria the number of cases were no autopsy was performed in the official number of drug related deaths is included (201 instead of 177).

For Portugal the data is still provisional.

Due to the low number of drug-induced deaths in a year, three-year (Cyprus and Malta) averages were used. The results have been rounded to the nearest integral.

'n' refers to the total number of deaths (15 to 64 years).

Reitox national reports 2012, taken from national mortality registries or special registries (forensic or police). Based on ‘national definitions’ as presented in ‘Drug-related deaths — methods and definitions’.

Populations and total numbers of death for the EU countries are extracted from Eurostat, for the last year available.
