How to subscribe to the EMCDDA news feed

This tutorial shows you the steps to follow to subscribe to the EMCDDA's RSS feed. For simplicity the tutorial assumes that you're using one of the following applications:
  • Mozilla Firefox (an RSS compatible browser)
  • Mozilla Thunderbird (an email client which also supports RSS)
but you can use any software that is RSS 2.0 compatible to subscribe to the feeds.
Both applications can be downloaded from the mozilla.org site.

Subscribing to the EMCDDA with Mozilla Firefox

1. Open the EMCDDA's home page (http://www.emcdda.europa.eu) in a window or tab of Mozilla Firefox.

2. Click on the orange RSS feed icon which you should be able to see on the right of the location bar (see below):

3. Firefox will display a window entitled 'Add Live Bookmark'. 'Live bookmarks' are how Firefox treats RSS feeds: it handles them just like normal bookmarks with the exception that the content of the bookmark changes with the content of the feed – a concept that is easier to understand once you see it in action!

4. Give the bookmark any name you like and save it wherever you like (just as you would for a normal bookmark). In this example, we're going to save it as 'EMCDDA RSS feed' and save it in the 'bookmarks toolbar'.

5. If you now open the bookmark you just created, you will see the latest news feeds for the EMCDDA -- selecting one will bring you straight to the page on the EMCDDA site where the news item is located.

Tip
If you subscribe to a lot of live bookmarks then you might find it easier and tidier to create a folder just for your RSS feeds.

Subscribing to the EMCDDA with Mozilla Thunderbird

For the purposes of this tutorial, we're assuming that you're not yet using Thunderbird to manage feeds so we're going to show you how to set up a dedicated account to do this but if you've already done this, you can skip straight to step 8.

1. If not already open, open the Thunderbird email client.

2. In the "Tools" menu, select "Account Settings..."

Tick the box 'Show the article summary instead of loading the web page' and then click on the 'OK' button.

11. Thunderbird will verify the feed and you should see the feed added to your subscriptions. You can then close the Subscriptions window.

12. To view the feeds, select the feed subscription and any corresponding news items will appear in the right similar hand panel. Simply click on a news item to view it.
