Attitudes to Drug Use
Attitudes are dispositions to evaluate an object either positively or negatively. In general, while they are important context measures, they do not predict actual behaviour very well. They should not be used as a substitute for measures of behaviour.

Beliefs about Consequences
Beliefs about the consequences of drug use can be categorised in two ways: whether they are (i) positive or negative and (ii) short-term or long-term. Such beliefs are more closely related to behaviour if focused on personal use and in specific contexts.

Bonding to Conventional Institutions
Designed to assess the bonding to institutions (family, school, community, religion, police). Evidence shows that it is a restraining factor in substance use and an important mediator factor for the efficacy of interventions.

Bonding to Parents and Family
In the CORE SCALES the items are built around the extent to which respondents perceive that they get on well with their family and on the importance that they attach to this relationship.

Perception of Social Support/Order

Personal Experience Inventory (PEI)
Designed to identify problems commonly associated with adolescent substance abuse. Also documents the onset, nature and degree of alcohol and other substance involvement, and the personal risk factors that may precipitate or maintain substance abuse.

Problem Behaviour
A large body of evidence shows the relationship between self-reported problem behaviour and drug use. The different forms of problem behaviour will be influenced by the cultural context of the evaluation and by the nature of the intervention.

Ratings of Social and Anti-Social Behaviour (Aggression)
Anti-social behaviour and aggression have been shown to be a major risk factor for drug use. The strongest indicators of such behaviour involve ratings rather than self-reports. The scale is meant for someone familiar with a child/adolescent's behaviour.
