Designed to assess the bonding to institutions (family, school, community, religion, police). Evidence shows that it is a restraining factor in substance use and an important mediator factor for the efficacy of interventions.

Another important feature of normative influence is perceived approval. The questionnaire investigates on a number of items on peer approval ranging from immediate peers (best friends) to remote peers (people of same age).

On parental regulation, two aspects are found to be important in relation to drugs, 'strictness and supervision'. The questionnaireinvestigates both overall regulation by parents perceived parental regulation of use of drugs.

Parental Risk Factors
Parental risk factors can be divided into broad categories (i) factors specific to drugs (ii) factors relating to supervision and regulation, and (iii) home atmosphere. The CORE SCALES focus on each of these areas.

Perceived Access to Drugs
Perceived access to substances is a strong predictor of use and is an important risk factor. The questionnaire focuses on thisaspect rather than attempting to gauge the extent to which such access is possible.

Perceived Extent of Drug Problems
Designed to gauge the perception of the size and extent of the drug problem. It is especially valuable in judging the seriousness of a problem.

Perception of Aspects of School Life
It has been shown that self-perception in school as well as the student's experience of a sense of challenge and perceived value of school are risk factor for drop-out. The CORE SCALE is designed to measure these features.

Perception of Parental Conflict
Parental conflict has been found to be associated with many problems of substance. This scale is concerned with the perception of this conflict by children and adolescents.

Perception of Risks Associated with Drug Use
The perception of risk is closely associated with 'beliefs about negative consequences'. Note: in the instrument on Perception of Risks Associated with drug use a low score means a high level of awareness.

Perception of Social Support/Order
It has been found that degree of perceived social support from parents and friends is a restraining factor in relation to drugs. Note: in the instruments on perception of Social Support / Order a low score means a high level of social support.

Personal Experience Inventory (PEI)
Designed to identify problems commonly associated with adolescent substance abuse. Also documents the onset, nature and degree of alcohol and other substance involvement, and the personal risk factors that may precipitate or maintain substance abuse.

Problem Behaviour
A large body of evidence shows the relationship between self-reported problem behaviour and drug use. The different forms of problem behaviour will be influenced by the cultural context of the evaluation and by the nature of the intervention.

Protective Factors- Involvement with Parents
One of the most important protective influences with regard to problem behaviour (including substance use and dropping out from school) is involvement with parents. This scale attempts to measure the frequency of such involvement.

Ratings of Social and Anti-Social Behaviour (Aggression)
Anti-social behaviour and aggression have been shown to be a major risk factor for drug use. The strongest indicators of such behaviour involve ratings rather than self-reports. The scale is meant for someone familiar with a child/adolescent's behaviour.

The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale is designed to assess self-esteem among adolescents.
