Abstract

Since 2000, Maria Youth Centre in Stockholm runs a structured six-week treatment programme for young people with massive cannabis abuse. The method used includes conversation sessions three times a week where the focus is on helping young people (17-20 year) to redirect cognitive patterns which have evolved during their period of abuse and to regain intellectual control. After completion of the six-week programme, the young people have to take part in supportive conversation sessions once a week for six weeks, based on the needs which have been identified during the programme, as well as in relapse prevention. Fifty young people completed the full programme during the period in question (2000-2004); average age at first cannabis use in this group was 14.2 years. At follow-up after one year, two-thirds were free of their cannabis abuse; 35 per cent had had no relapses and 33 per cent had had one brief relapse. Moreover, improvements could be seen in their overall life situation.
