Abstract

Social rehabilitation constitutes the third and last phase of the Drug Dependence Treatment Unit "18 ANO" and is probably the most crucial part of the therapeutic procedure. This phase aims at helping the patient to organise his/her life on a new basis by giving new content, values, meaning and goals. The Social Rehabilitation Centre follows a non-residential programme addressing individuals who have completed the stage of psychological recovery of the "18 ANO" (i.e., main therapeutic phase). Its main objective is the individual's reversion to social reality and his/her reenrolment in it without using any means of "escape". Its specific objectives include provision of vocational training, creative work, interest cultivation, participation in educational, spiritual and athletic activities, development of new relationships and social bonds as well as independence in all levels. The above objectives made necessary the establishment of an independent space for the operation of the social rehabilitation phase in March 1993. The therapeutic procedure is multifocus (individual, family, group) intervening in all parameters of the problem and going into the particularities of the individual on the basis of an overall plan. The drug recovery treatment is based on the individual and group psychotherapy; through this psychotherapeutic experience, which constitutes a type of "experience" of relationship, the personality of drug addict matures. In particular, the patient starts behaving as a social person by trying to freely express himself/herself and to develop relationships. The planning and implementation of group activities, artistic and athletic, the encouragement of initiatives towards social intervention, the participation in art, radio, music and other groups, as well as the continuous open dialogue on all issues compose an environment that mobilizes, attracts, comforts, supports and encourages the patient to deal effectively with the psychosocial pressure.
