Description / Type of Assessment:

It is a structured Interview, to be applied by staff at Intake of clients to Correctional Residential treatment programs for adolescent substance misusers.

Primary use / Purpose:

To assess substance abuse and other life problems of adolescent clients.

Sociodemographic Background.
Family Background.
Peer Relations.
Criminal History.
Health and Psychological Status.
Drug History.
AIDS Risk Assessment.
Interviewer Comments.
Client Assessment Profiles.


Adolescents, 6th grade of reading level.

Administration / Completion Time:

Approximately 60 minutes.

Scoring Procedures:

The scoring instructions are available, together with TCU/PMES questionnaire forms, including all items and factors. See Answer Cards (ICards.pdf among relevant documents).

Scoring Time:

Approximately 10-15 minutes.


No user manual and no specific training program are required by personnel qualified. A brief training period of several hours' duration is advisable, although it is not essential for personnel such as drug counsellors.

Practicability / usefulness:

To assess Needs and Client Characteristics at intake to correctional residential treatment programs.


The score obtained for an individual can be compared to the scores obtained by the normative sample.
TCU/PMES has not as yet had quite the in-depth psychometric development for establishing test-retest reliability and validity that some other instruments for the same purpose have had.
Compared to some of the other instruments, TCU/PMES is not as long and complicated, and the items are relatively simple and easy to understand.
