Introduction

The co-occurrence of psychiatric illness and substance disorders, commonly termed co-morbidity or dual diagnosis, is not a new phenomenon. However, in recent years the issue has gained momentum in the political and professional discussion as it has become apparent that a large and probably growing number of people are affected. In this Selected issue the focus is on the coexistence of psychiatric and personality disorders and the use of illicit drugs.
