Geographic spread and GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

Current methods for estimating the incidence and prevalence of drug misuse tend to be retrospective and are not capable of forecasting spatio-temporal trends. Mapping of drug misuse is restricted to known incidence and prevalence rates. In contrast, various disciplines are increasingly using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to study and predict associations between location, environment and behaviour.The EMCDDA has launched a project to show how a geographical information system can be used to develop a model of the geographical spread of drug misuse in some European regions. Illustrative maps for London and areas of Italy, as well as detailed spatio-temporal maps of the diffusion of drug use in Scotland, have been produced. The feasibility of using a geographic model to predict levels of drug use in areas where data are lacking or to forecast future trends in drug use has also been studied.
