Italy has recently adopted two new national drug policy documents. The national plan of action 2010–2013 was developed following the 5th National Conference on Drugs. It covers two main areas (demand and supply reduction) and five specific pillars: prevention; treatment and prevention of the related pathologies; rehabilitation and reintegration; evaluation and monitoring; and legislation (counter narcotics/crime).
There is also a detailed project plan 2009–2010 which addresses prevention; prevention of drug-related diseases; treatment and support through public drug treatment units (SerTs) and therapeutic communities; reintegration; epidemiology and assessment; warning systems and technological innovations; planning and organisation; research; training and ongoing training; and international activities.
