The Portuguese national focal point is located within the Institute on Drugs and Drug Addiction (IDT). The IDT is directly responsible for the implementation of the national drug strategy. It plans, implements and coordinates drug demand reduction interventions, and collects, analyses and disseminates information on drug use and its responses.
Since 2006 and following a decision from the Minister of Health, the IDT’s mission was enlarged to encompass all alcohol-related issues. The IDT is managed by a Management Board, and its structure includes five departments (grouping 18 units) at central level, five delegations at regional level, and a network of centres specialised in drug treatment and prevention of drug use at local level.
